Research

Carol Mason is Professor of Gender and Women’s Studies, and Professor of English. She has received fellowships from the Rockefeller Foundation for the Humanities, the Bunting Institute at Harvard University, and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Dr. Mason is affiliate faculty at the Center for Right Wing Studies at University of California, Berkeley, and serves on the editorial board of American Studies. She is the author of books examining different aspects of the rise of the right since the 1960s: Killing for Life: The Apocalyptic Narrative of Pro-life Politics (Cornell University Press, 2002); Reading Appalachia from Left to Right: Conservatives and the 1974 Kanawha County Textbook Controversy (Cornell, 2009); and Oklahomo: Lessons in Unqueering America (State University of New York, 2015). Her articles have appeared in various collections and peer-reviewed journals including Signs, Cultural Studies, Frontiers, Feminist Formations, New Political Science, Hypatia, Journal of Appalachian Studies, GLQ, Journal of Constitutional Law, and Oxford Research Encyclopedia of Literature, among others. She is working on a fourth book, Righting Women’s Literature: From Housewife Populism to Femonationalism.
