Students from Shanghai University (SHU) will get a taste of the bluegrass this week as the UK American Studies Program in the College of Arts and Sciences will host a summit for SHU students on Monday, April 22.
UK Archaeologist Helps Unearth Hatfield and McCoy Artifacts
A notorious feud between the Hatfields of West Virginia and the McCoys of Kentucky is once again making national news, but this time it is hitting a little closer to home. A discovery of artifacts associated with patriarch Randall McCoy’s home and site of an infamous 1888 attack were confirmed by Kim McBride, a historic archaeologist with the Kentucky Archaeological Survey, a joint partnership with the University of Kentucky Department of Anthropology and the Kentucky Heritage Council/State Historic Preservation Office.
UK oral historian Doug Boyd wins historic preservation award for a book chronicling what it was like to live in the notorious Crawfish Bottom community of Frankfort, Ky. The book was published by University Press of Kentucky.
UK Faculty and Students Share Appalachian Culture in China
University of Kentucky students and faculty will travel to Shanghai in May to share Appalachian culture at the American Studies Center at Shanghai University.
The University of Kentucky College of Arts and Sciences will present the Distinguished Professor Lecture, featuring History Professor Ron Eller at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, April 12 in the William T. Young Library auditorium.
Students serve as history-detectives, acquiring information from community leaders, local archivists and historians from across the U.S., to accumulate relevant information never analyzed concurrently. They developed and debated historical interpretations of the primary sources they found and engaged in both online and classroom discussions.

Students are encouraged to submit abstracts of their work related to Appalachia for presentation at the third annual Appalachian Research Symposium and Arts Showcase. The deadline for the call for papers is Dec. 15.
